Western Red Cedar Sauna Bench Boards – 30mm are cut for one purpose: the sauna bench. At 30mm thick and 47mm wide, these are substantial, serious boards — the kind that feel solid underfoot and stay stable through thousands of heat cycles.
The bench is the most demanding surface in any sauna build. It carries weight, absorbs sweat, endures repeated heating and cooling, and takes constant steam exposure. - Measure your bench run in millimetres (length × number of tiers)
- Allow 5–10mm spacing between boards for ventilation and drainage
- Divide total bench surface area by effective board width (approximately 52–57mm centres with spacing)

Cedar that is not sealed or oiled develops a natural silver-grey patina over time, which many sauna purists consider the most authentic finish. Left unfinished — as is traditional — these boards will colour gradually and evenly with use.

INSTALLATION NOTES
- Do not apply paint, varnish, or solvent-based finishes to sauna bench timber. These seal the wood surface and can off-gas harmful fumes at sauna temperatures.
- Leave 5–10mm gaps between boards for ventilation and drainage.
- Pre-drill near board ends to prevent splitting.
- Use stainless steel or galvanised fixings only — standard steel fixings will corrode and stain the timber.
- No sanding required prior to installation, but lightly sand any rough edges before fitting.
- If you wish to treat the bench, use a food-safe sauna oil specifically formulated for interior sauna use.

Do I need to treat or finish the cedar before use?
No finish is required. Leave the timber unfinished for a traditional result. If you prefer to oil the bench, use a dedicated sauna-safe timber oil only — never varnish, lacquer, or standard timber oil.
How long will cedar bench boards last?
With proper care — regular rinsing, good ventilation, and no sealing — Western Red Cedar bench boards used in a domestic sauna setting can last 15–25 years or more. The natural oils provide ongoing protection without any maintenance treatment.
What is the difference between these and Aspen bench boards?
Aspen is a pale, odourless timber often preferred in Finnish and Nordic saunas where a neutral, bright interior is desired. Western Red Cedar is darker, warmer in tone, and has a distinctive natural fragrance that many sauna users consider part of the experience. Both perform well at sauna temperatures — the choice is primarily aesthetic and sensory.
