Bring the benefits of a large stone surface to a small sauna with the Harvia Cilindro PC66E 6.6 kW Black Steel Electric Sauna Heater.

The Cilindro PC66E is a tall, narrow pillar heater rated for sauna rooms of 5 to 9 m³. It stands 1340 mm high on a footprint of just 255 mm x 255 mm and holds up to 75 kg of sauna stones, which is what brings the benefit of a large stone surface to a small room. The tall and narrow shape also makes it a well-suited replacement for a wall-mounted heater.

The stylish black steel colour gives the heater a modern look, and the pillar form fits into a wide range of sauna interiors and installations. The heater can stand free on the floor, be embedded in the sauna benches, or be placed beside a glass wall.

It can be wired either way. The PC66E runs on 400 V 3N~ three-phase or on 230 V 1N~ single phase. The arrangement depends on the supply available at the property and is set at the heater’s terminal block by your licensed electrician.

This is an “E” model. There are no controls on the heater body, so it must be operated by a separate Harvia control unit, which is sold separately. The temperature sensor is supplied in the box. Sauna stones are also sold separately.

Control Unit Required

This heater has no controls on it. The Cilindro PC66E is an “E” model. There is no timer, thermostat, or switch on the heater body, and it cannot be turned on or regulated on its own.

A separate Harvia control unit is required and is sold separately. The heater will not operate without one. The control units we offer with this heater are shown in the options on this page. Please make sure a control unit is included in your order.

The temperature sensor is included. The heater ships with its temperature sensor, along with the safety shield and fastening kit.

Do not confuse this with the manually switched models. The Cilindro PC66 (item code HPC66400M) is controlled by manual switches. The PC66E (item code HPCE66400M) is the version described on this page, and it is controlled by a separate control unit.

Installation and Contents

Safety Distances

  • Front, combustible and non-combustible materials: 100 mm
  • Sides, combustible and non-combustible materials: 100 mm
  • Behind, combustible and non-combustible materials: 100 mm
  • Ceiling: 540 mm
  • Floor, 400 V 3N~ three-phase connection: 30 mm
  • Floor, 230 V 1N~ single phase connection: 50 mm
  • Minimum sauna room height: 1900 mm
  • Installation opening: 455 mm wide x 385 mm deep x 1900 mm high

Planning notes for the room:

  • The supplied safety shield, called the protective sheath in the installation manual, is mandatory on the PC66E and must be fitted. The safety distances above apply with it fitted.
  • The clearance to the floor is the one distance that changes with the wiring arrangement: 30 mm on 400 V 3N~ three-phase and 50 mm on 230 V 1N~ single phase.
  • The floor under and around the heater must be heat resistant. Hot pieces of stone can damage floor coverings and cause a risk of fire.
  • Only one electric heater may be installed in the sauna room.
  • If the heater is installed further than 100 mm from a wall, the temperature sensor must be installed on the ceiling instead of the wall.
  • Do not place the supply air vent where the airflow cools the temperature sensor.
  • The heater can be embedded in the sauna benches. The safety distances above and the protective sheath requirement still apply.
Installation and electrical connection must be carried out by a licensed electrician working to the installation manual supplied with the heater, and the safety distances and installation instructions in that manual must always be followed.

What's Included

  • Heater
  • Temperature sensor
  • Safety shield, called the protective sheath in the installation manual
  • Fastening kit
  • Installation and operating instructions

Not included: The Harvia control unit is not included and must be purchased separately, as the heater has no controls of its own. Sauna stones are also not included and are required for the heater to operate correctly.

Using and Caring for Your Heater

Piling of the Sauna Stones

How the stones are piled has a large effect on both the safety and the heating capability of the heater. Follow these guidelines:
  • Use solely angular split-face sauna stones that are intended for use in a heater. Peridotite, olivine-dolerite and olivine are suitable stone types.
  • The stones should be 5 to 10 cm in diameter.
  • Do not use light, porous ceramic “stones” or soft soapstones. They do not absorb enough heat when warmed up, which can damage the heating elements.
  • Wash off dust from the stones before piling them into the heater.
  • Pile a dense layer of stones against the steel grid and pile the rest of the stones loosely. The dense layer stops direct heat radiation from overheating the materials around the heater, and the loose piling in the middle lets air flow through, which heats the room and the stones well.
  • Be especially careful at the corners, where the heating elements sit near the grid.
  • Support the heating elements with stones so that the elements stay vertically straight.
  • Do not drop stones into the heater.
  • Do not form a high pile of stones on top of the heater.
  • Do not place any objects or devices inside the stone space or near the heater that could change the amount or direction of the air flowing through it.
  • Cover the heating elements completely. A bare heating element can endanger combustible materials even outside the safety distances, so check that no heating elements can be seen behind the stones.

Heater Maintenance

Sauna stones disintegrate in use because of the large variation in temperature. Rearrange the stones at least once a year, or more often if the sauna is in frequent use. At the same time, remove any pieces of stone from the bottom of the heater and replace disintegrated stones with new ones. This keeps the heating capability optimal and avoids the risk of overheating. Pay attention especially to the gradual settling of the stones, and be sure that the heating elements do not appear with time. The stones settle most rapidly within two months of piling, so expect to top them up early on and keep a few spare stones on hand. The overheat protector can also trip at temperatures below -5 °C in storage or transport. Bring the heater into a warm room before installation and reset the protector before use. On the PC66E the reset is made at the control unit, not on the heater.

Heating Your Sauna with Harvia Sauna Heater

When using the heater for the first time, both the heater and the stones may emit odours. Ventilate the sauna room efficiently to remove these odours. If the heater output matches the size of the sauna room, it will take about an hour for a properly insulated sauna to reach the desired bathing temperature. The sauna stones normally reach that temperature at the same time as the sauna room. A suitable temperature for the sauna room is about 65 to 75 °C.

Big Sauna Feeling, Small Footprint

The stylish black steel colour provides a modern touch for the sauna. The body is steel, the protection rating is IPX4, and the heater is built for use in an interior wet area. It is mounted vertically on the floor and is intended for household use. Because it is an “E” model, it is operated by a separate Harvia control unit, which is sold separately.
