Heat a larger sauna room with soft, stone-driven warmth using the Harvia Cilindro PC90E 9 kW Black Steel Electric Sauna Heater.

The Cilindro PC90E is a floor-standing pillar heater rated at 9 kW and recommended for sauna rooms of 8 to 14 m³. Its tall column holds up to 90 kg of sauna stones, so heat is released from a large stone surface for an even, enveloping sauna bath and generous steam when water is poured over the stones.

The glossy black steel exterior suits modern sauna interiors, and the slim 320 mm square footprint gives you options. Stand it free on the floor, place it in front of a glass wall as a feature, or embed it into the bench, where the published safety distances still apply.

This is an E model, which means there are no switches, timer or thermostat on the heater body. It must be paired with a separate Harvia control unit, sold separately. The temperature sensor is supplied in the box. The heater can be wired either way, to a 400 V 3N~ three-phase supply or to a 230 V 1N~ single phase supply, and all installation and connection work must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

Serious Stone Heat for a Larger Room.

Heat a larger sauna room with soft, stone-driven warmth using the Harvia Cilindro PC90E 9 kW Black Steel Electric Sauna Heater.

The Cilindro PC90E is a floor-standing pillar heater from Harvia’s Cilindro family, rated at 9 kW and recommended for sauna rooms of 8 to 14 m³. The tall column holds up to 90 kg of sauna stones, and the pillar design distributes heat evenly across that large stone surface for soft yet strong heat. Water poured over the stones produces steam for the bath.

Key Features

Massive Stone Capacity

Holds up to 90 kg of sauna stones, which stores heat well and produces soft, long-lasting steam when water is thrown.

Sized for Larger Rooms

Rated 9 kW and recommended for sauna rooms of 8 to 14 m³, suited to larger domestic sauna rooms. The stated volumes must be neither exceeded nor undercut. That range assumes panelled walls and ceiling with adequate insulation behind the panels. Uninsulated surfaces such as glass, brick, glass block, concrete or tile increase the output needed, so add 1.2 m³ to the room volume for every square metre of uninsulated surface when sizing, and multiply the room volume by 1.5 if the sauna has log walls.

Wired Three-Phase or Single Phase

The same heater suits a 400 V 3N~ three-phase supply or a 230 V 1N~ single phase supply, so it fits either kind of switchboard. Your electrician chooses the arrangement at installation, based on the supply available at the property, and sets it at the heater’s terminal block.

Control Unit Required

This heater has no controls on it. The Cilindro PC90E is an E model, which means the heater body carries no switches, no timer and no thermostat. It cannot be switched on or regulated on its own.

A separate Harvia control unit is required and is sold separately. The control unit powers the heater and connects to a control panel that manages temperature and operating time. The control units we offer with this heater are shown in the options on this page. Please make sure a control unit is included in your order or already installed before the heater is commissioned.

The temperature sensor is included. The temperature sensor is supplied in the box with the heater, so it does not need to be purchased separately. Sensor cable length is 5 m. The sensor is normally mounted on the sauna wall, but if the heater stands more than 100 mm from the wall the sensor must be mounted on the ceiling instead. Plan the ventilation around it as well, because the supply air vent must not be positioned so that the airflow blows onto the sensor and cools it.

Do not confuse this model with the PC90. The Harvia Cilindro PC90, item code HPC900400M, is equipped with a timer and a thermostat and is controlled by manual switches on the heater itself, so it needs no separate control unit. The PC90E, item code HPCE900400M, has no switches at all and cannot run without one.

Why This Heater

The pillar form factor gives you freedom in how the sauna is laid out. At 320 mm square and 930 mm tall, the PC90E can stand free on the floor, sit in front of a glass wall for an eye-catching display, or be embedded into the bench, where it sits minimalistic and discreet. The published safety distances still apply to an embedded installation. The glossy black steel exterior gives a modern look and fits into various types of sauna interiors and installations.

Slim Pillar Footprint

A 320 mm square base and 930 mm height mean the heater takes up very little floor area for the stone volume it carries.

Flexible Placement

Stand it free on the floor, position it in front of a glass wall, or embed it into the sauna bench for a discreet installation, with the published safety distances still applying.

Full External Control

Paired with a separate Harvia control unit, the range of available features can include heater temperature adjustment, on-time control, lighting and ventilation adjustment, parental control, week timer, PIN code lock, remote switch-on and a door safety switch. The exact feature set varies by control unit.

Temperature Sensor in the Box

The heater ships with its temperature sensor, so the control unit and the sauna stones are the only items still to be added.

Installation and Contents

Safety Distances

Minimum clearances for the Cilindro PC90E, as published by Harvia. These values must be observed without exception, because deviating from them causes a risk of fire. Only one electric heater may be installed in a sauna room, and the floor covering under and around the heater must be heat resistant, since hot fragments of stone can fall from the stone space. Always follow the installation and operating instructions supplied with the heater, and have all installation and connection work carried out by a licensed electrician.

  • To the front: 100 mm to both combustible and non-combustible materials
  • To the left and right sides: 100 mm to both combustible and non-combustible materials
  • To the rear: 100 mm to both combustible and non-combustible materials
  • To the ceiling: 950 mm
  • Clearance beneath the heater, 400 V 3N~ three-phase: 30 mm, set with the heater’s adjustable legs
  • Clearance beneath the heater, 230 V 1N~ single phase: 50 mm, set with the heater’s adjustable legs
  • Minimum sauna room height: 1900 mm
  • Minimum opening for an embedded installation (W x D): 520 mm x 520 mm, which is the 320 mm heater plus the 100 mm side clearances. The clearances above apply to an embedded installation as well.

What's Included

  • Harvia Cilindro PC90E heater, 9 kW Black Steel
  • Fastening kit
  • Temperature sensor
  • Installation and operating instructions

Using and Caring for Your Heater

Piling of the Sauna Stones

Properly arranging sauna heater stones is essential for safe operation and correct heating performance. Follow these guidelines:
  • Use suitable sauna stone materials such as peridotite, olivine diabase, olivine and vulcanite.
  • Use cleavage-surface and/or rounded stones in your sauna heater.
  • If heating elements come into contact with the stones, use rounded stones only in the outer layers of the stone space, so that they do not come into contact with the heating elements.
  • Ceramic stones and decorative stones may only be used if the manufacturer has approved them and they are used according to their instructions. Decorative stones suit the top layer of the stone space only, must be placed loosely so air can circulate, and must not touch the heating elements.
  • Stones for this heater should be Ø5 to 10 cm.
  • Wash the dust off the stones before piling them into the heater.
  • Pile a dense layer of stones against the steel grid, taking particular care at the corners where the heating elements sit nearest the grid, then pile the stones in the middle loosely so air can flow through the heater.
  • Do not drop stones into the heater when placing them.
  • Do not wedge stones between the heating elements.
  • Pile the stones so that they support each other, rather than resting their weight on the heating elements.
  • Support the heating elements with stones so that the elements stay vertically straight.
  • Avoid forming a high pile of stones on top of the heater.
  • Do not place any objects or devices inside or near the heater that could change the amount or direction of the air flowing through it.
  • The heating elements must be completely covered with stones before the heater is used. Check that no heating elements can be seen behind the stones, because a bare heating element can endanger combustible materials even outside the safety distances.

Heater Maintenance

Sauna stones disintegrate over time due to repeated temperature fluctuation. Rearrange the stones at least once a year, and more often if the sauna is used frequently. Remove stone debris from the bottom of the heater and replace any disintegrated stones with new ones. This maintains proper airflow and heating performance and helps prevent overheating. Pay particular attention to the way the stones gradually settle. They settle most rapidly within two months of piling, so check the stone space often during that first period and make sure no heating elements have become visible.

Heating Your Sauna with Harvia Sauna Heater

When the heater is used for the first time, both the heater and the stones may give off an odour. Ventilate the sauna room thoroughly to clear it. If the heater output is matched to the size of the sauna room, a properly insulated sauna takes about an hour to reach bathing temperature. The sauna stones normally reach the correct temperature at the same time as the room. A suitable temperature for the sauna room is about 65 to 75 °C.

Built for the Rooms Other Heaters Struggle With

The PC90E is an E model. There are no switches, no timer and no thermostat on the heater body, so it is operated entirely by a separate Harvia control unit that is sold separately. This is the key difference between the PC90E and the manually switched PC90, which carries its own timer and thermostat. External control also opens up features that a switch on the heater cannot offer, such as a week timer and remote switch-on, depending on which control unit you choose.
