A Cedar Square Barrel Sauna for a Deloraine Backyard
Deloraine is a country town on the Meander River in northern Tasmania, about 50 km west of Launceston, with the Great Western Tiers to the south. For their backyard, this Deloraine homeowner chose our Western Red Cedar Square Barrel Sauna, an outdoor sauna with room for 4 to 8 people.
The sauna sits on a gravel pad, with a timber step up to the door. The front is mostly glass, with a full glass door between two tall windows, so daylight fills the cedar interior. Inside there are two levels of cedar benches and an electric heater with a tall column of sauna stones.
The Sauna: Western Red Cedar Square Barrel Sauna
A round barrel sauna is simple to build, and a square sauna gives more room inside. The square barrel sauna combines the two. Its walls are made of Western Red Cedar staves, about 38.5 mm thick, fitted around the shape and held tight with 316 stainless steel straps. The solid timber insulates the sauna on its own, so no extra insulation is needed.
The two-level benches run along the back wall. Bathers can choose a hotter upper seat or a milder lower one, and the second level makes room for more people. The benches, front door and back wall arrive partly pre-assembled, which keeps the build simple.
The sauna works with both electric and wood-fired heaters. This owner chose an electric heater, so there is no firewood to stack and no flue to install.
Why a Square Barrel Sauna Suits a Tasmanian Backyard
- More room inside. The square shape gives more space than a round barrel sauna, with seating for 4 to 8 people.
- Simple to put together. The staves fit around the shape and are strapped tight, and the key parts arrive partly pre-assembled.
- Made for the weather. Western Red Cedar resists decay and insects, and the stainless steel straps and fittings resist rust.
