An 1800 mm cedar hot tub on a courtyard deck, a few steps from the outdoor table.
This electric cedar hot tub now sits in a courtyard garden in Coogee, in Sydney's eastern suburbs. It is our Electric Cedar Hot Tub in the 1800 mm size, 1200 mm deep, made from Western Red Cedar with stainless steel bands.
The tub stands on a timber deck against a rendered garden wall. Timber steps lead up to it, with towels on hooks right beside them. The outdoor dining table is a few steps away, and fairy lights in the trees make it an easy place to soak after dark.
Coogee sits on the coast between Clovelly and Maroubra, and many homes here have small, private courtyards rather than big backyards. An electric cedar tub suits that well. There is no fire to light and no stove beside the tub, so it fits where space is tight.
This is the 1800 mm tub, 1200 mm deep. The shell is high grade Western Red Cedar with 38 mm staves, held by stainless steel bands, with cedar bench seating and a cedar floor inside. Cedar holds heat well and resists rot on its own, and over time it weathers into a soft patina.
A SpaNET SV3-VH control system with an SV3T touch pad runs the 5.25kW variable heater and the pump. You set the temperature, up to 41 degrees, and the tub holds it there. If the water drops below 4 degrees, freeze protection runs the pump and heater.
The pump and filter sit in a cabinet built into the steps, out of sight and out of the weather. The tub arrives as a partly assembled kit that two people can put together in a few hours, and a licensed electrician connects it to its own circuit.
The heater and pump live under the steps rather than in a stove beside the tub, so the whole thing takes up less room on the deck.
Set the temperature on the touch pad and the tub heats up and holds it. No wood to store and no waiting for a stove to come up to heat.
Western Red Cedar stands up to sun and rain on its own, and the foam cover in marine grade vinyl keeps the heat in between soaks.
